Assaults on North Carolina prison personnel had increased this year even before a deadly escape attempt Oct. 12 at Pasquotank Correctional Institute. Two officers, a vocational instructor and a maintenance worker were killed, and four inmates are charged with murder.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo says, “The situation is intolerable.” Inmates argue that shutting down the 10-jail complex is the only solution for violence by guards and gang members, mistreatment of the mentally ill and juveniles, and unjustly long detention for minor offenders.
Thousands of officers working at every jail in England and Wales walked off the job in a 24-hour protest of the “volatile and dangerous state of prisons.” U.K. authorities said the job action was an illegal strike.
