Daniel Broyles, one of the men at the center of two scams that traded on people’s hopes for new clean and green technologies, has pleaded guilty in federal court to conspiracy to commit mail fraud and wire fraud, mail fraud, and money laundering.

The $1.4 million program to investigate polluters who cause environmental harm to communities of color, announced recently by Attorney General Merrick Garland, has big ambitions and a small budget. Advocates admit there are a “lot of questions about how it will operate.”

California Attorney General Rob Bonta has subpoenaed ExxonMobil,  as part of what is considered to be a first-of-its-kind broader investigation into the petroleum industry for its alleged role in causing a global plastic pollution crisis.

The Environmental Protection Agency is pivoting from a largely reactive stance on civil rights to one that aggressively ventures into the field on its own initiative, scanning for areas of greatest concern, kicking off tough compliance reviews, and rethinking how it gives out grants, prioritizes its resources, and enforces the law.
