The city of Minneapolis recently reached a $700,000 settlement with family members who were locked inside police squad cars while their father was fatally shot by officers, the Associated Press and The Guardian report. On December 2019, Chiasher Vue, who was suffering from a mental health crisis, was shot after pointing a rifle at the police.
The settlement resolves the family’s lawsuit alleging unlawful and unconstitutional detention by the police. Vue’s siblings say their case can inform future policing and hope to prevent other families from experiencing similar trauma. The Minneapolis Police Department has since updated its policy to clarify how police are expected to interact with witnesses in order to preserve their constitutional rights.
