On Thursday night, the Minnesota House of Representatives approved a bill banning private prisons in the state, KSTP reports. The bill, authored by Rep. Dan Wolgamott and approved with a vote of 70-61, aims to prevent inmates in the Department of Corrections and local sheriffs’ custody from being housed in correctional facilities that aren’t operated by government entities. At least five other states have passed similar legislation, along with President Joe Biden’s executive order to phase out private prisons from federal use in 2021. Since 2010, Minnesota has not had any private prisons since Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton closed down and companion legislation is still under consideration by the Senate.
