In response to the nationwide abortion bans, social media companies are providing information to law enforcement that can be used to prosecute women in states that have criminalized abortion, Katherine Tangalakis-Lippert reports for Insider. Companies including Meta, the parent company of Facebook, have been supplying chat logs with evidence in court cases.
Additionally, a ProPublica investigation revealed online pharmacies selling abortion medication are sharing user data with Google and other third-party sites which can be recovered by law enforcement. Representatives for the FBI told Insider they can’t comment on what criteria is required for officers when making requests for social media or internet history. Meta stated they only provide information “narrowly tailored” to a request and will challenge deficient or overly broad requests in court.
