Surveillance video newly released on Thursday shows multiple correctional officers attempting to restrain, punching, kicking and, ultimately, kneeling on the back of an inmate who later died after running from his cell in a Shelby County, Tennessee jail, Lucas Finton reports for the Memphis Commercial Appeal.
Gershun Freeman died after at least 10 officers intervened in his restraint in October 2022. In the footage, one officer appears to restrain Freeman by a knee on his back (a controversial and potentially deadly method of restraint) for nearly six minutes. Freeman died in the jail shortly after. The video was released by the Nashville District Attorney’s Office.
