Defense lawyers for five members of the Proud Boys say jurors who are set to be seated in the trial on Monday could be biased, Laura Italiano reports for Business Insider. According to Insider’s anonymous source, the judge already denied the defense a venue change motion on a fair-jury argument. As soon as the jurors are seated Monday, the source expects the defense will make the argument again: “They’ll tell the judge, ‘Now that we’ve seen the jury, this is ridiculous.'”
The group of defendants are accused of plotting to storm the Capitol on January 6, 2021, blocking Congress from certifying the 2020 presidential elections. Some potential jurors have reportedly called the group racist, violent, anti-Semitic and a threat to democracy and national security. Opening statements are scheduled for Tuesday, Jan 10, with the trial expected to last through mid-February.
