Since 2020, Sacramento, Calif., has experienced a 68 percent increase in homelessness. California’s capital recorded 9,300 unhoused people, according to the most recent data. Several other cities have seen a similar spike as pandemic relief funds ran dry, report Kathleen Ronayne, Michael Casey and Geoff Mulvihill in the Associated Press. Other jurisdictions with significant increases include Portland, Ore., Prince George’s County, Md., and Phoenix, Ariz. But in Boston, the number of people sleeping on the streets and in shelters has dropped 25 percent over the period, as advocates have pushed hard for permanent housing for people in the city.
