According to a recent safety report released by Uber, it’s second ever, drivers and riders reported a total of 3,824 sexual assaults from 2019-2020, a 38 percent drop from the company’s previous report covering 2017-2018, says Axios. However, the number of deaths due to physical assaults and crashes both increased, with 20 people being killed in assaults and 101 dying in crashes, both increases from the earlier report.
Gig Workers Rising, which aims to represent the interests of those who work for on-demand services like Uber, said in a statement that the report shows how driving for ride-share services is “inherently dangerous.” Uber legal chief Tony West noted that Uber’s fatality rate is actually half the national average and that 2020 was the deadliest year on American roads since 2008 amid an increase in drunk driving, speeding and other risky behavior.
