Racially and religiously aggravated offenses recorded by police in England and Wales hit a fresh high in 2021, with a total of 76,884 racially and religiously aggravated offenses being recorded that year, up 15 percent from 66,742 in 2020, reports Bloomberg News. The number of offenses has been on an upwards trend since 2013, but this is the biggest percentage jump since 2017, which saw a 16 percent rise in offences fueled by reaction to terrorist attacks in London and Manchester, according to data compiled by the UK Press Association. The increase is also likely to reflect improvements by police in the recording of these offenses, along with a greater willingness by the public to report hate crimes.
