Hennepin County, Minneapolis Judge Peter Cahill delayed the trial of former Minneapolis police officers Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng in connection with the murder of George Floyd until January 2023, citing concerns about how recent events and attention on the cases could affect finding an impartial jury, reports the Wall Street Journal. Cahill said the publicity around Thao, Kueng, and fellow former officer Thomas Lane being found guilty of violating Floyd’s civil rights, as well as Lane pleading guilty to aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter, could create challenges for finding impartial jurors to weigh the charges. Cahill denied the defendants’ request to change the location of the trial, however, arguing that doing so wouldn’t impact the fairness of the trial because of the widespread attention Floyd’s murder received across the state and nation.
