Texas Takes Steps to Finance Border Wall Construction

Texas Governor Greg Abbot has announced new details on how the state will fund construction of a wall along its border with Mexico, including a state-managed donation site allowing citizens to contribute and the transfer of $250 million from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice to the Disaster Fund within the Office of the Governor to help bolster border security, reports Border Report.

Abbott also demanded that the federal government give back any land it took to build the border wall during the Trump administration, explaining that the Texas government would then speak to landowners about the state’s own endeavor. The push for renewed wall construction efforts is in response to the over 1,500 arrests of people crossing the border illegally since March that threatens to overwhelm Texas’s jails where space is becoming scarce. Despite Abbot’s efforts, many communities neither think the wall is necessary nor believe that it can actually be built.
