A report from the Texas A&M University Institute for Predictive Analytics in Criminal Justice, found that Latinos are the racial or ethnical group most likely to be searched by Texas police. Researchers analyzed millions of traffic stops made in the state during 2020, says the Austin American-Statesman. The study also found that in fact police were more likely to find contraband when they stopped white drivers. The data shows Latinos were arrested most frequently. When looking at hit rates, a measure commonly used to assess bias in police searches and show the rate at which contraband is found, the report showed that Latinos had the lowest hit rate. Researchers concluded their data showed evidence of racial bias and racial profiling.
