The article of impeachment against former President Donald Trump will be sent to the Senate Monday, clearing the way for the former president’s second impeachment trial, reports The Washington Post. “It will be a full trial, it will be a fair trial,” said Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-NY).

Schumer pushed back on arguments by some Republicans that a trial of a president who has already office would be unconstitutional. Democrats are seeking to convict Trump and bar him from holding federal office again. “Make no mistake, there will be a trial, and when that trial ends, senators will have to decide if they believe Donald John Trump incited the insurrection against the United States.”

The House impeached Trump on a single article of “incitement of insurrection” for his role in the Jan. 6 takeover of the Capitol by a pro-Trump violent mob.

“It makes no sense whatsoever that a president or any official could commit a heinous crime against our country, and then be permitted to resign, so as to avoid accountability,”  Schumer said. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who had argued for delaying a trial until next month, reiterated his objections to moving quickly.
