A state grand jury returned multiple felony and misdemeanor charges in an indictment of two Indianapolis police officers accused of using excessive force while arresting two women during a protest in late May, the Indianapolis Star reports. Widely circulated video of the arrest shows officers using batons and pepper balls on the women, who are Indianapolis residents. They have filed a federal lawsuit over the incident.
Officer Jonathan Horlock, a five-year veteran, was indicted on three counts of battery, official misconduct, perjury and obstruction of justice. Officer Nathaniel Schauwecker, an eight-year veteran, is accused of four counts of battery and two counts of official misconduct. Two other officers involved in the incident were not indicted. The indicted officers remain on administrative duty. A lawyer for the two women who say the attack on them was unprovoked said his clients were at the protest to observe and photograph it. They said they were headed to their car, in observance of an imminent curfew, when police confronted them.
