Three more youngsters were killed in another shattering weekend of gun violence in Chicago, one week after five children were fatally shot, the Chicago Tribune reports. A 10-year-old girl was struck in the head by a stray bullet that came through a second-floor apartment window. She was the second young child shot and killed Saturday. Police said a 20-month-old boy died after he was shot in a car seat while riding with his mom. Also on Saturday, a 17-year-old boy was fatally shot before noon after he became embroiled in a fight with someone in a “large crowd,” police said. The deaths marked a bloody Saturday, in which eight people, including the children, were killed in separate shootings. By Sunday morning, four more fatal shootings added to the growing toll.

“Too many times children are killed,” said Police Chief Fred Waller at a news conference after the 20-month-old died but before the 10-year-old was shot. “It seems like just yesterday, it was actually last Saturday, I was in front of you all talking about a 3-year-old kid. … When is this gonna stop?” The shootings come just before the July 4 weekend, generally the most violent time in Chicago. Last year, at least six people were killed and 63 others wounded by gun violence over the long weekend, fewer than other times like 2017, when the weekend lasted four days and more than 100 people were shot, 15 fatally. Last weekend, at least 106 people were shot in Chicago, 14 of them fatally. It was one of the most violent weekends in recent memory. In the first six months of the year, Chicago has experienced a large spike in shootings and homicides over the same time last year.
