A shooting near Honolulu’s Diamond Head on Sunday left two police officers dead, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser. The officers, identified as Tiffany-Victoria Enriquez and Kekaulike Kalama. were shot by Jaroslav “Jarda” Hanel, 69, outside a house where he started a fire as he was being evicted, Honolulu Police Chief Susan Ballard said. Both officers had less than 10 years each on the force.
Ballard said Hanel is presumed dead inside one of the homes. As Hanel was being evicted from his home, he allegedly attacked his landlady, fired on responding officers and started the fire. Property owner Lois Cain filed an eviction notice against Hanel on Jan. 15. The filing said he did not have a rental agreement and refused to vacate. Neighbors identified Cain, 77, as the woman Hanel attacked. The officers were wearing bullet-proof vests but were struck above the vests, Ballard said. She said Hanel did not have any gun permits.
