Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) renewed his calls for legislation to make Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and other drug lords pay for President Trump’s wall along the Mexican border, The Hill reports. Cruz cheered the life sentence handed down to Guzmán in a federal courtroom this week. “I think the next step is to criminally forfeit his entire global criminal enterprise,” Cruz told TMZ. “It’s worth billions and we should use every penny of that money to build the wall and secure the border.”

Cruz dismissed claims about the drug lord being bankrupt, saying: “He a ran a global criminal cartel and the Department of Justice has estimated he has in excess of $12 billion.” The senator admitted that “finding those assets, getting those assets, won’t be easy.” Cruz said he’s talked to President Donald Trump “directly” about the plan, and he is “enthusiastic about the idea.”
