A controversy around Sen. Kamala Harris’ first major decision as San Francisco’s district attorney not to seek the death penalty for a gang member who fatally shot a police officer in 2004 is likely to follow her into her bid for president, The San Francisco Chronicle reports. Harris’ Democratic primary opponents probably won’t bring it up, as they all oppose the death penalty, but if she makes it past the primary it’s likely to reignite the national debate over capital punishment.
