A police lieutenant in suburban Indianapolis was shot and killed yesterday after walking up to a car that had flipped in a crash and landed in a front yard, reports the Indy Star. Southport Police Lt. Aaron Allan was responding to the accident at 3 p.m. on Indianapolis’ south side when one of two occupants of the overturned car opened fire, hitting him multiple times. Two other officers returned fire and wounded the shooter. What prompted the man to fire at Allan was unclear, and officials released few details about the bizarre episode.

Jason Brown, 28, of Indianapolis, was later arrested on a preliminary murder charge. He remained hospitalized today in good condition. Court records show Brown was convicted of misdemeanor marijuana possession in 2014 and sentenced to 30 days in jail. Lt. Allan, known by the nickname “Teddy Bear,” was officer of the year in Southport in 2015. He had worked there for six years.
