A new Police Foundation infographic on law enforcement use of drones “highlights operational, training, and legal and regulatory compliance considerations” for public safety agencies. The Washington, D.C.-based organization said the infographic, supported by a federal grant, is designed to help the country’s 18,000 police agencies understand essential questions about use of the emerging technology of small-unmanned aircraft system (sUAS).
The Police Foundation said drones are an economical alternative to the use of manned helicopters and airplanes. The infographic addresses constitutional protections concerning their use. The foundation suggests that police agencies “clearly define procedures for safe, legal and ethical use” of drones and explain to citizens how, when and why drones might be used.
