A day after a trainer shot two managers after being fired, Miami’s Equinox fitness club is sending grief counselors to help clients and employees as it becomes the latest workplace to grapple with a fatal employee assault, reports the Miami Herald. The club told members in a email of the “terrible tragedy … when a former trainer walked into our club in Coral Gables and shot two members of our team.” Ex-trainer Abeku Wilson, 33, fatally shot himself after the shooting.
Equinox employees reported after the shooting that Wilson was fired, and then shot two of the top executives at the high-end gym. The shooting left Janine Ackerman, 35, the club’s general manager, and Marios Hortis, the fitness manager, 42, both dead. Those who knew the bulky, six-foot-two Wilson described him as a friendly, positive, well-balanced man who often acted more reserved around strangers. Something went horribly wrong Saturday afternoon at the gym where he worked in a luxury shopping center.
