Criminal Case Filings in Federal Court Drop 3 Percent

The number of criminal cases filed in federal courts dropped three percent to 77,357 in the year ending last Sept. 30, reports the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts. The number of drug crime defendants fell three percent, and the number charged with property offenses, including fraud, declined 13 percent. The largest categories of offenses were drugs 24,638, and immigration, 20,762. Some 2,897 offenses were listed as violent.

Defendants prosecuted for immigration violations decreased less than 1 percent nationwide. The number rose two percent in the southwestern border districts, which received 81 percent of total immigration defendant filings. The court agency also reported that the total of 137,410 persons under post-conviction supervision was 1 percent greater than the total one year earlier.
