A $10 million bond was set today for an Urbandale, Ia., man charged with killing two police officers, reports the Des Moines Register. Scott Michael Greene, 46, is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Urbandale officer Justin Martin and Des Moines Police Sgt. Anthony “Tony” Beminio. Both were killed while sitting in their patrol cars in ambush-style attacks on Wednesday. Police said an investigation found probable cause that Greene, who has a history of confrontations with police, was the shooter.

Several members of the jail’s utility response team — staffers who are specially trained to respond to critical situations — surrounded Greene during a brief hearing today in a small jail courtroom. Yesterday, a visibly angry Des Moines Police Chief Dana Wingert lashed out at Greene. “It was cowardly in every sense of the word, from the way it was carried out to the way that it ended,” Wingert said. “When the suspect — the monster that does this — has options of how this is going to end … he chose to run and hide.”
