Milwaukee DA Chisholm: Don’t Funnel All Local Problems Into Justice System

The criminal justice system in the U.S. “can get out of control at times,” Milwaukee County District Attorney John Chisholm told the “Smart Decarceration Initiative” conference in St. Louis on Friday. “When it goes out of control, there are going to be bad results.” The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Chisholm noted that thee U.S. does not really have a criminal justice system but that it is a county-by-county setup, amounting to “3,100 criminal justice systems, each of them run by an elected official.”

“We have to get away from the concept that all the problems that exist in the community can somehow be funneled into the criminal justice system and that system will solve all the problems,” Chisholm said. “It just hasn’t worked. In concentrated areas of our community for 20 to 30 years now, we’ve gotten the same bad results. …We’re not going to solve the problems by sending more cops and charging more cases.”
