Georgia Police Chief Says He Accidentally Shot Wife With Service Weapon

The police chief of Peachtree City, Ga., accidentally shot his wife yesterday, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. She was in critical condition last night. Police Chief William McCollom, called 911 shortly after 4 a.m. Margaret McCollom, 58, was airlifted from her home to Atlanta Medical Center. The shot was fired from the chief's service weapon, a Glock 17 9 millimeter.

McCollom joined the department in 2012 and became Peachtree City's police chief last October. “In the short time that he's been chief, he's earned their respect and admiration, and this is just a terrible, terrible thing to have happened,” Mayor Vanessa Fleisch told Channel 2 Action News. Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said that after an investigation, “We'll see if it's appropriate to bring charges.”
