Arkansas Chief Suspended for Bullying Reporter

The police chief in Jonesboro, Ark., will serve a 30-day suspension for bullying a reporter, reports the Associated Press. Mayor Harold Perrin said Chief Michael Yates would be suspended without pay and required to undergo additional training. He also must issue written apologies to the Jonesboro Sun and reporter Sunshine Crump, who quit the paper after Yates posted a series of derogatory comments about her on Facebook.

Perrin also instructed the city attorney to review the police department’s policies on releasing public information and to correct any deficiencies. The mayor gave Yates a written warning that he’d be immediately fired if he again used social media to “imply threats, actions or consequences” tied to his authority as chief.
