At least six people were killed and 15 others were injured today by a gunman in a Durango, Co., elementary school, the Durango Herald reported in a story topped by an editor’s note saying it was a training exercise and “not part of a true emergency.” The story went on to report in realistic detail that multiple shots were fired shortly after 9 a.m. at the school, said Lt. Keith Cramer of the La Plata County Sheriff's Office.
The story was later revised to remove much of the graphic detail. One commenter said on Facebook, “I’m sure the intent was not harmful, but the decision [to run the article] is not good.” The incident was reported by the JimRomenesko.com media website with the headline “Consider It a Practice School-Schooting Story?”
