Forged Court Paperwork Leads to Mistaken Release of Two FL Murderers

Two murderers from the Orlando area are on the loose after they were mistakenly released from a Florida prison, the Orlando Sentinel reports. State investigators said someone forged paperwork, duping officials at the Franklin Correctional Institution into thinking the men’s sentences had been reduced. Charles Walker, 34, was released Tuesday. He was serving a life sentence for a 1999 murder. Joseph Jenkins, 34, left the same prison on Sept. 27. He was serving a life sentence for a 1998 murder.

Florida Corrections Secretary Michael Crews said the men were released because of the forged court paperwork. Corrections officials acted on the documents, which came from the Orange County Clerk of Courts, not realizing they were falsified, Department of Corrections spokeswoman Jessica Cary said, “I don’t know how it happened.”
