Amid rising calls to arm teachers — spurred by the December 2012 slaughter of 26 students and teachers in Newtown, CT — the non-profit Center for Homicide Research examined 30 cases since 1990 in which educators illicitly discharged weapons on or off school grounds.
In 19 of the 30 incidents, teachers used the firearms to commit suicide; one other case was an attempted suicide.
In most cases (21 of 30), including a majority of suicides, the teacher also used the weapon to harm another.
Students were not targeted in any of the incidents, but other teachers and administrators represent 37 percent of victims; present of former significant others make up 31 percent of victims.
