Guns from states with weak firearms laws are being used at an ever-increasing rate in New York City crimes, Mayor Michael Bloomberg said yesterday, reports the New York Daily News. “Keep your guns out of our city,” the mayor said. “Couldn’t be simpler.” Ninety percent of guns used in city crimes in 2011 came from other states, Bloomberg said. That compares to 86 percent in 2010 and 85 percent in 2009.
Bloomberg’s list of the top 10 out-of-state sources for firearms used in New York City crimes was topped by Virginia, followed by North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Florida, Ohio, Alabama, Texas, and West Virginia. All of those states have some sort of “private sale loophole” that doesn't require background checks, Bloomberg said.
