Video from a restaurant security camera only deepens the mystery of the one-car crash in Los Angeles at 4:30 a.m. on June 18 that killed journalist Michael Hastings, reports WhoWhatWhy.com.The wreck has prompted conspiracy theories that Hastings, 33, was killed as a result of his work, which included a 2010 Rolling Stone profile that ended the military career of Gen. Stanley McChrystal, commander of NATO’s security force in Afghanistan.
According to WhoWhatWhy, the video shows Hastings’ Mercedes C250 coupe whiz by the intersection of Melrose and Highland avenues in the Hancock Park neighborhood, traveling at 80 mph or more. The car elevates slightly on a pavement rise at the intersection, goes out of control about 100 feet later, swerves into a grassy media, and then explodes in a fireball as it hits a palm tree. Highland is a four-lane neighborhood street, and fatalities are rare there. The video fails to answer the most salient question about the wreck: Why was Hastings traveling at such treacherous speeds.
