The George Zimmerman trial in Florida on charges of killing teenager Trayvon Martin is getting so much media coverage even in the jury selection stage because it “checks all the boxes of urgency. Race looms large here,” Chris Cuomo, new co-host of CNN morning news program “New Day” tells CNN’s Howard Kurtz.
Kurtz wonders whether the coverage level is mostly to attract high ratings, but Cuomo says the Zimmerman trial probably won’t get so high ratings as did the recent murder trial of Jodi Arias in Arizona, which included major sexual elements the Zimmerman story lacks. Cuomo also observes that “the media does perform a very specific and valuable function when it comes to the criminal justice system. The stories are so immediately relatable. They’re such a part of our social fabric from everything from the narratives involved to the nature of consequences and how the process works.”
