The fiancee of a convicted Pennsylvania former state senator has launched an online campaign to get federal inmates fresh veggies with dinner, reports the Philadelphia Inquirer. Carolyn Zinni says Vince Fumo, in a federal prison camp in Kentucky, “has not had a piece of fruit or fresh vegetable in almost 4 years,” she wrote in a petition on the website change.org, where it had gathered 27 signatures by last evening.
Zinni, who calls her movement “Real Food for Felons,” said, “I thought Michelle Obama was all about health and fresh foods for schools. What about prisons? Are these men and woman less valuable? This is just wrong!!” She contended that a poor diet wold lead to heart attacks and strokes among inmates. David Brewer, public information officer at the Ashland facility where Fumo is serving a five-year term for corruption, said prisoners are typically served bananas and apples for breakfast and lunch, and vegetables on a daily basis, but could not give an example of a fresh vegetable on the meal plan.
