Clements to Succeed Esserman as Providence Police Chief

Acting Police Chief Hugh Clements will succeed Dean Esserman as Providence’s police chief, Mayor Angel Taveras announced today, says the Providence Journal. The 26-year-veteran has the respect of the officers, the community, and the mayor himself, Taveras said.

Clements said he was “humbled and honored” by being chosen as the city’s 38th chief. He will focus on reducing violent crime, and he pledged to move the force forward by seeking national accreditation.
