The number of people with a federal license to carry a firearm hit its highest point in more than a decade last year, according to a new report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF).
About 118,000 people held a license in 2010, the highest number since 1997, but still significantly less than the peak of more than 284,000 in 1992.
The annual statistical release outlines firearms commerce in the country during 2011 and prior. The report also shows a steady increase in the number of guns imported into the U.S. from abroad. Brazil topped the list of countries from which the U.S. gets guns–about 750,000 of the more than 2.8 million guns imported into the U.S. in 2010 came from Brazil.
