The Rise of Femicide and Women in Drug Trafficking


Women’s involvement in drug trafficking has deepened through active participation as drug runners and mules, as well as indirectly via sex trafficking, prostitution and associations with members of organizations, found a new analysis by the Council on Hemispheric Affairs. Some drug organizations specifically seek out women recruits, believing that long-entrenched notions about drug trafficking allow women to slip under the radar.

As drug-related crime has increased, it has also led to problems for the prison systems and a rash of female murder victims, a phenomenon known as “femicide.”
