Houston armored-car robberies are on the rise, with as many holdups in the area so far this year as during all of the previous two years, reports the Houston Chronicle. So far, six armored cars have been robbed, compared with two last year and four in 2009. The robbers have become increasingly violent. Shots were fired during five of this year’s holdups, including exchanges of gunfire with armored car company employees.
“The bad guys know that they’re coming up against an armed guard right from the start,” said FBI agent Randy Mondor. “They have to do something to try and get the jump on the person, whether it’s by surprise or coming out shooting. These are not takeovers of armored cars. They’re attacking the (guards) and not the vehicles.”
