Responding to Al Qaeda, Bloomberg Runs Ad Urging Gun Show Regs

After an Al Qaeda operative issued a video urging Islamic militants to take advantage of the U.S. as a nation “absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms,” the organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns released a television ad urging Congress to regulate gun shows, where all kinds of people — even terrorists — can purchase firearms.

The ad features comments from the operative, Adam Yahiye Gadahn, with gun show footage. The ad will run on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, as well as on the Sunday morning talk shows. New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is paying for the ads out of his own pocket — at an estimated cost of $200,000 to $250,000. Bloomberg said, “Criminals already know how to take advantage of gaps in our gun laws, and now Al Qaeda knows, too. Americans, including N.R.A. members, overwhelmingly support stronger laws to keep guns away from terrorists and other dangerous people.”
