A host of new Republican governors is causing many cops and firefighters to shift their allegiances away from the GOP, reports Politico.com. In the past, police and fire unions frequently have strayed from from labor's longtime support for Democrats. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker and others have left public-safety unions fearful that this year’s attack on teachers might be next year’s attack on them.
The shift could have significant repercussions. Angry cops and firefighters make for bad PR. Chuck Canterbury, national president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said his members are “shocked” by the turn of events. He is traveling the country rallying FOP members to rise up against anti-labor laws in their states or in support of their colleagues in other states. “There is going to be a backlash,” said Canterbury, a former county police officer in South Carolina. “We are going to hold them accountable.”
