"Numbers Game"

There are serious problems with Mississippi’s drug enforcement strategy, concludes a new report, “Numbers Game: The Vicious Cycle of Incarceration in Mississippi's Criminal Justice System,” co-written by the ACLU of Mississippi and Justice Strategies, a national policy and research center.

Drug enforcement teams encourage the indiscriminate use of confidential informants,black Mississippians are three times more likely than whites to go to prison on drug charges even as drug use rates are largely identical for both groups, and extremely harsh sentences for relatively minor street-level transactions involving small amounts of drugs combine to create a failed system researchers found.
