What Do Your TV Habits Say About Your Views on Crime?

Whether you watch documentary crime shows or fictional crime dramas on television says a lot about your views on everything from capital punishment to your own personal safety, says a new study by researchers at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.

The study, entitled “Watching the Detectives,” appears in the Winter 2011 issue of The Sociological Quarterly. Researchers surveyed more than 800 Nebraskans about their viewing habits, specifically whether they tended to watch true crime programs like A&E’s The First 48, or fictional dramas, like CSI or Law & Order. Among the findings, those who watched documentary style programs reported having a more negative view of the criminal justice system, and those who watched more crime dramas were more likely to support the death penalty.
