A Houston jewelry store owner shot and killed three robbers in a shootout yesterday in whatt he Houston Chronicle calls a humble jewelry store and pawn shop. After the trio tied up Ramon Castillo’s wife and ordered Castillo at gunpoint to put his hands behind his back, he pulled a pistol from his waistband and shot one man dead, then grabbed a shotgun from his office and engaged in a shootout with the other two armed robbers.
Castillo, 52, himself was shot at least three times and is in critical but stable condition. It was the third time his shop had been robbed in 22 years. Investigators said so many shots were fired in a two- or three-minute span that they could not estimate the number of rounds. “It is a pretty incredible story. The man was clearly defending his business, clearly defending his wife,” said police officer M. F. Waters. “It’s amazing with all the bullets flying around in there that she wasn’t hit.” Neighbors described the Castillos as a hard-working couple who labor seven days a week and take care of customers who live in the neighborhood, selling jewelry at affordable prices and allowing people to pay small amounts toward purchases in layaway.
