Detroit Police Chief Warren Evans was fired by Mayor Dave Bing, who hired him a year ago, reports the Detroit Free Press. Bing said Evans exhibited poor judgment on “a combination of a lot of things [] over a period of time.” There has been speculation that Evans’ participation in a reality-show video — he is seen holding an assault rifle and declaring he’ll do “whatever it takes” to clean up the city — led to his departure.
As recently as May 28, Bing said he had the “utmost confidence” in Evans. Assistant Chief Ralph Godbee will serve as interim chief. He pledged to continue to bring the department under compliance with the federal consent decree and further improve Evans’ data-driven approach to reducing crime.
