After several years of planning, the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics has launched a new Web site. It can be found at http://bjs.ojp.usdoj.gov/ BJS officials say that the new site is designed to be clearer, easier, and faster to use than the old site. Users should be able to do key-word searches more quickly and efficiently on the new site, BJS says.
The new site does not include data that didn’t appear on the old site, but the agency hopes to add new data features as early as mid-2010. At one time, BJS was talking to the FBI about operating a joint site between the two Justice Department agencies but that plan did not come to fruition. BJS is the Justice Department’s main criminal justice statistical agency, but the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report predates BJS and is frequently cited as a source of information on crimes reported to law enforcement.
