Are Death Penalty Foes Celebrating Ohio’s Improving The Protocol?

Ohio’s successful execution yesterday using a single-drug lethal injection protocol ” might provide support for the claim that some states are genuinely interested in improving their capital systems,” says Ohio State University law Prof. Douglas Berman on his Sentencing Law and Policy blog.

Berman wonders if the execution really pleases those who object to the three-drug protocol used in 35 states, which may have forced people to suffer while being executed. Berman suspects that vocal opponents of three-drug lethal injection protocols are categorical opponents of the death penalty more generally and that they are not celebrating Ohio’s execution. Ohio has roughly one execution scheduled for each of the next six months.
