Senate Holds Hearing On NIJ’s Laub, OVW’s Carbon

John Laub, University of Maryland criminologist who has been nominated to head the National Institute of Justice, assured Senate Judiciary Committee ranking member Jeff Sessions (R-AL) yesterday that he was not an anarchist, reports Sessions asked about a paper he wrote as a doctoral student that seemed to espouse anarchism; Laub responded, “I re-read the article 30 years out and frankly didn't understand much of it.”

The panel also heard from Judge Susan Carbon of New Hampshire, who was nominated to head the Justice Department's Office on Violence Against Women. Carbon said she would focus on the prevention of domestic violence and helping children suffering from the effects of domestic abuse.
