Some 15,000 cities in the U.S. and Canada are expected to participate tonight in the 26th annual National Night Out, a crime prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Typically, the events involve citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials. The sponsor said 37 million people participated last year.
Town Watch, a Pennsylvania-based non-profit group, said National Night Out is designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness; generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs; strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
