Deitch, a lawyer, is an expert on institutional conditions and management, prison and jail overcrowding, corrections law, prison privatization, sentencing reform, probation and parole, and alternatives to incarceration. Since 1993, she has served as an independent consultant to state and local policy-makers and agency officials on a wide range of corrections and sentencing issues. She serves as reporter to an American Bar Association Task Force that drafted national standards on prison legal issues, and most of her current research focuses on the issues of prison oversight, accountability, and human rights. In 2006. she organized a conference entitled “Opening Up a Closed World: What Constitutes Effective Prison Oversight?”
