The society says it is a “group of conservatives and libertarians interested in the current state of the legal order.” It believes that “it is emphatically the province and duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.” The organization seeks to “reorder priorities” in the legal system to emphasize “individual liberty, traditional values, and the rule of law.” The society maintains a “conservative and libertarian intellectual network” whose members have had significant influence on legal policy and judicial nominations in Republican presidential administrations. As a group, the society says it does not lobby for legislation or take a position on nominees.
